ABSTRACT

Tumor incidence in wild mammals is reportedly very low. Wild nutria, a large rodent, is known to carry many infectious diseases, but rarely exhibits neoplastic diseases. We necropsied a male wild nutria and found a large nodular mass in the left inguinal region, adjacent to the penis. Histopathologically, the mass was diagnosed as preputial gland adenoma. Spontaneous preputial gland adenomas are extremely rare in all animals. Moreover, reports of tumors in nutrias have been limited to adenocarcinomas of the lungs and uterus, as well as subcutaneous fibromas. Here, we describe preputial gland adenoma in a wild nutria.

ABSTRACT

A total of 44 adult or juvenile nutrias were necropsied for disease survey. A large nodule was found in the liver of a nutria. The histopathological specimen of the hepatic nodule was microscopically examined, and sectional worms were found in the bile duct. The worms showed a tegument with spines, highly branches of vitelline glands and intestine. Finally, we histopathologically confirmed fascioliasis in a wild nutria. In the present study, a case of fascioliasis in a wild nutria is first confirmed in Korea.

ABSTRACT

We described here a patient who had two lung masses. Although the two masses had the same histology and a similar good response to initial chemotherapy with gemcitabine and carboplatin, the response to pemetrexed as a second-line treatment was different after re-growth of the tumors. These two lung masses could have originated from different clones or they could have progressed through different paths of molecular pathogenesis after metastasis, which would lead to different tumor characteristics, including their chemosensitivity. Regardless of their pathogenetic mechanisms, it seems important to recognize that tumors with the same histology that develop in one patient can have different responses to drugs.

ABSTRACT

Pulmonary alveolar proteinosis is a rare disorder that is characterized by the abundant accumulation of surfactant-derived material within the alveolar spaces and distal bronchioles. Although the findings of homogenous ground-glass opacities overlaid by thickened septa, which form a "crazy paving" pattern on high-resolution computed tomography, can assist in making a diagnosis, a lung biopsy is usually required. This disorder has a variable clinical course, from spontaneous resolution to respiratory failure and death. While a whole lung lavage has been the standard treatment since the early 1960s, GM-CSF therapy has been attempted based on the recently suggested pathogenetic mechanism. We report a case of pulmonary alveolar proteinosis that resolved spontaneously after an open lung biopsy.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Interleukin-5 (IL-5) is responsible for eosinophilia in allergic diseases. In allergic bronchial asthma, there is a correlation between the extent of eosinophil infiltration in bronchial mucosa and IL-5 concentrations. In addition, IL-2 concentration is elevated in the airways and associated with eosinophilia in symptomatic patients with bronchial asthma. In animal studies, IL-2 can induce eosinophilia by increasing the synthesis of IL-5, however, it is still unknown how IL-2 can induce eosinophila in human being. The aim of this study is to evaluation the effect and mechanism of IL-2 on prolongation of eosinophil survival. METHODS: After purifiing the eosinophils from the venous blood of allergic patients with eosinophilia, we measured the survival rates of eosinophils using trypan blue dye exclusion test, and the number of eosinophils with Randolp's solution. We compared the survival rates of eosinophils in the presence of IL-2 or IL-5. Neutralizing antibody for IL-5 was added in IL-2 treated eosinophils to reveal whether IL-2 induced prolongation of eosinophil survival was mediated by IL-5. We checked IL-5 m-RNA expression of lymphocytes in the presence of IL-2 by using Reverse transcription-Polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) method to revealed the effect of IL-2 on IL-5 m-RNA expression on lymphocyte. alpha and beta IL-2 receptors were measured on eosinophils and lymphocytes with flow-cytometer after stimulated with IL-2. RESULTS: 1) Eosinophil survival rates increased dose dependently on IL-5 and IL-2. 2) The eosinophil survival rates increased by IL-2 were not inhibited by the pretreatment with neutralizing antibody for IL-5. 3) IL-5 m-RNA was not expressed on lymphocytes by the treatment with IL-2 up to 96 hours. 4) IL-2 upregulate the expression of IL-2Ralpha on eosinophils, instead of no effect on the expression of IL-2Rbeta. CONCLUSION: Interleukin-2 had the enhancing effect on the survival rates of eosinophils. The mechanism behind IL-2 induced eosinophilia might be the increment of IL-2 receptors on eosinophils rather than IL-5 synthesis by lymphocytes.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Thalium 201(TI-201) has been a widely applied myocardial perfusion agent for the detection of coronary artery disease. however its low emission energy and long half-life make this agent suboptiomal for the examination of coronary artery disease. To circumvent the physical limitation of TI-201, a group of technetium 99m-labeled isonitril complex has been developed. Our study was done to examine the value of SPECT with 99mTc-HexaMIBI in estimating myocardial perfusion in patients with myocardial infarction. METHODS: We evaluated the sensitivity of SPECT with 99mTc-HexaMIBI in 29 patients with acute myocardial infarction. We also compared the severity and vascular territory of abnormal perfusion on SPECT scanning with severity of coronary artery stenosis, values of serum enzyme and sites in ECG. RESULTS: 1) There were 26 patients(90%) who showed perfusion defect, and 3 patients(10%) who showed normal perfusion in myocardial SPECT. The 3 patients with normal perfusion demonstrated non Q-wave infarction of ECG. 2) Among 23 patients performed coronary argiography, there were 19 patients(82%) who showed positive findings on myocardial SPECT and luminal narrowing above 50% on coronary angiogram, and there were 3 patients(13%) who showed significant coronary artery stenosis in spite of negative myocardial SPECT. 3) The grade of perfusion defect showed no significant difference between groups undergone thrombolytic therapy and groups not undergone thrombolytic therapy. 4) There was good correlation between the site of perfusion defect on SPECT and the site of infarction on ECG. CONCLUSION: We conclude that SPECT with 99mTc-HexaMIBI is a promising non invasive test for simultaneous diagnosis of myocardial infarction and evaluation of perfusion defect.
